B/W Enlarging
Darkroom Equipment
B/W Chemicals

Have all chemicals and equipment ready
Take the negative carrier out, put the selected negative on it.
Put back the negative carrier, keep it level to avoid movement of negative
Set the highest aperture
Safelight must be at suitable distance. Reflected light is better than directed for the safety and a wider illuminiation
Enlarger timer with 1/10 sec. scale is suitable. With socket for safelight, the timer can turn off safelight when focusing is set.
Adjust the height of the enlarger head for the size of enlargement, then put a used photo paper with back side up on the easel, set the highest aperture for focus, afterward set the aperture down about 2 stops or with judgement (refer B/W enlarging page).
Processing trays will be better to arrange according to process with developer closer to enlarger, then stop bath and/or fixer. Either choose different color trays or different color print tongs with white trays. One print tong is fixed for one tray.
One hand holds the exposed paper at middle of shorter side, at the closer end of tray, push it into the tray with 30 degree up and enter the developer at about 4 cm. distance from edge. Immediately use another hand to press gently with the print tong at middle and the four corners of the paper so that the complete paper is covered with developer. Repeat pressing in the same manner every 15 seconds approximately.
Do not put the print tong on paper when developing. When time is up, use the print tong to grab a corner of the paper, slide it out from the developer, keep the paper with one corner down about a few centimeter height from the tray, let the developer drop back to the tray.
Then put the paper into the fixing bath, same agitation method as developer to make sure that the paper is covered with fixer. Subsequent agitation is not so demanding, but still be done randomly.
Check for the best exposure time from the test print.
Fixed multiple time test print, exposures from left are 15, 12, 9, 6 and 3 sec.
Progressing multiple time, exposures from left 3, 5, 9, 15, 23 sec.
From test print, the 9 sec. exposure is the closest match for black and white. White area turned gray in 12 sec. or 15 sec. exposures. So 10 sec. is chosed.
Contact print with proof printer: with negative in 6 frames per strip, line up with emulsion side up on the glass plate of the proof printer.
Adjust the height of enlarger so that the light cover a bit wider than the proof printer. Set about f/8, exposure time for general case is 10 sec. For contact print, it is not required to have all frames correct because not all frames are the same and the contact print is for reference only.
It is a good practice to mark Contact print and negatives with serial number for future work.
