My digital photo by F. H. Tong Jan. 5, 2006

For old guys including me, the new generation is hard to understand.

Some of them might show their digital photos to us and ask for advice. This lead to controversial concept about what is good digital photo.

There are some reasons. Newcomers always suppose that with a good digital camera, the photos produced must be good. In other words, they have successfully performed the operation.

Certainly, the technical know how has been part of photography since the old days. We had spent lots of time to learn, practice and master.

I think that for newcomers, the 'My digital photo' is the most important thing to consider. What is the difference between a digital photo taken by you or me or by the digital camera automatically? Will all such photos similar? Can you know which one was taken by you?

This is not a new element specified for digital photography. In fact, I have taken this as the priority for teaching photography. Everyone should have his/her own selection and presentation of subjects. Without personal touch, no one would like to take photos.

We have known that the attraction of photography is to create images by oneself. In the beginning stage, we might be lack of the technique to present our images in the best form.

I do not blame anything for the situation that most newcomers may not prefer to learn. That is the change we have to face. We must remember that there are many useless courses and we may fail to give newcomers the confidence to spend time and money to learn.

In fact, there are many ways to learn, self-studying is one of them. The most important part is the awareness that one must learn one way or the other.

That is, one must fine-tune his/her presentation technique so that he/she can have confidence to say, 'this is my digital photos'.
